Chapter Twenty Four: The Corporate Swindle

"What have you done, Noah?" Dad demanded the moment he arrived home. He flung the papers in his hand in my face, his fury evident. "You went behind my back to transfer ownership of rights of my land to those people?"
I observed from the papers that they were property deeds from the mail, reporting the transfer of ownership rights. I should have gone through the mailbox when I arrived home.
But it wasn't as if I expected they would be sending it in today, or that Dad would snoop through the mailbox. He never received letters from anyone. What prompted him to do that today?
I shrugged. He would find out either way.
I stood up to face Dad. "It's not just your land, Dad. It will be mine, and I refuse to inherit debts. Yes, I sold it to them! What!" I exclaimed. "You are just unnecessarily attached to that land. We're struggling to survive, and that land is not yielding any profit, yet it's adding more to the dead weight of debts on our shoulders!"
