Cutlery clinked against silver dishes as we had dinner.
Grandpa raised a glass of water to his mouth and drank from it. Then, he set the cup down with a firm thud on the table.
I paused briefly in my attempt to raise my spoon to my mouth, aware of what would come next.
The atmosphere was tense. That was always the case with Grandpa around, and the old man was rarely ever absent.
He was too cranky and irritable. I couldn't recall a meal I had shared with my family without Grandpa reproving someone.
I was often the subject of his attention, Landon, my brother, being the golden son.
"How's things going with Holden's heiress?" Here we go.
I set my spoon down, dabbing at the sides of my mouth with a napkin before responding, "Well."
"Clarify what well means," he demanded.
I huffed. "What does it matter? Either way, your decision has been made. I'm getting married to her, whatever."
