CHAPTER FIFTEEN - DINNER WITH THE DEVIL
Emma and Marcus walked side by side to the front door, tension crackling between them. Marie greeted them with forced cheerfulness, ushering them inside.
"Emma, sweetheart! Marcus, so good to see you," she chirped, her smile not quite reaching her eyes.
Thomas stood in the living room, his posture stiff. "Emma. Marcus."
Emma hugged her father, feeling his reluctance. "Hi, Dad."
Marcus extended his hand. "Mr. Collins, thank you for having me."
Thomas shook it briefly, his expression guarded. "Let's eat, shall we?"
They settled around the dining table, the clinking of cutlery filling the awkward silence. Claire breezed in, her auburn hair swinging.
"Sorry I'm late! Traffic was a nightmare," she announced, breaking the tension.
Marie seized the opportunity. "Claire, tell us about your new art project."
As Claire launched into a description of her latest installation, Emma caught Marcus's eye across the table. He offered a small, hesitant smile.
