Carter was no longer the obedient child he had been before. He refused to talk to Liam.
Given the grievances his mother had suffered at the hands of the Jones family, not confronting Liam physically was already quite courteous.
"Don't stop me, and don't follow me, or you'll regret it," he warned. He knew Liam was powerful and that he couldn't take him on directly, but no one could bully his mother—not even Liam.

"I'm worried about you going home alone."
