Chapter 6
"Don't be ridiculous," Daphne replied to the system. She looked up at Lester and thought that the system was right. Lester was rich, powerful, and extremely handsome.
Her cheeks started to burn as she looked at his face.
"Are you—feeling unwell?" Lester asked, making Daphne even more bashful.
"I'm going to the bathroom. Please excuse me," said Daphne.
"Alright," Lester replied.
Daphne saw her red cheeks in the mirror and patted them with cold water. "Ah! Come on! Stop flushing!"
As soon as she thought of his face, her cheeks started burning again. This would not work. She had to stop thinking about him.
By the time she came back, she realized Lester had almost half of the cake.
"I'm sorry. It's very good, so I couldn't help taking a couple more bites." Lester looked embarrassed.
"It's fine. I'll have them send it to you every day if you like it," said Daphne.
"No need to trouble yourself."
Lester glanced at her belly and added, "How much longer do you have until delivery?"
"I'll be giving birth at the end of this month," Daphne replied.
"Alright. I still have some work to do, so I'll be taking my leave. Have a good rest."
"Alright."
When Lester was back in his study, Victor asked in confusion, "Have you not told Ms. Miller that she's no longer a criminal? It seems to me like she still has no idea."
"You talk too much," said Lester.
After Victor left, Lester grabbed a document from the document. It was a pardon letter with the stamp of the United Federation on it.
Lester had no idea why he agreed to let Daphne stay in his manor. Could it be because she was pregnant with Herkoen's child?
Ever since Daphne found out that Lenko was fine, she often made things like desserts and fruit teas and delivered them to him. She also delivered some to Lester as well.
She did not know if a person as busy as Lester would eat and drink them all, but she just delivered them every day. It was the thought that counts. How Lester dealt with the food after that was out of her hands.
Lenko was discharged from the hospital a week later. The first thing he did after he came back was to look for her. Daphne was very touched because that meant Lenko had been thinking of her.
However, Lenko came with bad news as well—he had to return to his family.
To begin with, he was only there for the summer break. School was about to start, so his family had been urging him to go home.
"Daphne, the household staff is packing my luggage for me now, so I took the opportunity to come and say goodbye to you," said Lenko.
Daphne patted him on his shoulder. "Look at you. You look like you're about to cry. It's not like we're never going to meet each other anymore. Besides, we can talk to each other on the phone."
"Oh yes, I almost forgot about the phone. Can you see me off later?" Lenko asked.
"My family sent a battleship to pick me up, but it's on the outskirts of the city. You're too good to me, Daphne. I can't bear to say goodbye to you."
"Sure!" Daphne replied. She then packed some snacks with a longer shelf life for him.
Lester could not see Lenko off because of work. Daphne parted with Lenko at the outskirts of the city and watched him board the battleship.
She could not help but think about how great it was to be born into a wealthy family. They used a battleship to pick Lenko up. However, that also showed the Waltzan family's powerful status in Hildi.
Daphne thought about how all the emperors since ancient times were afraid that their subordinates would overshadow them. If she were the Emperor of Hildi, she would be afraid of the Waltzan family too.
What if the Waltzan family wanted to overturn the throne and charged into the Emperor's bedroom with their battleships?
"It's windy here. Let's hurry up and head back," Britney urged as she stood behind Daphne.
Daphne nodded.
However, the alarm went off as soon as the flying car started. The radar detected that a flying car was speeding toward them. The consequences would be beyond imaginable if they crashed into each other.
Many residents in the city would fly their flying cars whenever they head out. However, they were outside the city at that moment. They had plenty of space around them, and there was nothing that could shelter them.
The pilot in the cockpit was sweating bullets. This was the first time he encountered a situation like this.
"Hand on tight, Ms. Miller. I'm going to speed up," said the pilot.
This was the second time something bad happened in the same month. Daphne was incredibly nervous, and she felt pain in her belly.
"M-My belly is not feeling well," said Daphne.
"Could you be going into premature labor?" Britney panicked. She looked around and said, "I'll help you lie down in the bedroom. It'll be easy for you and your baby to get hurt if you remain standing."
The more Daphne felt worried, the more obvious the fetal movement became. It seemed as if the baby was dying to come out.
"What should I do? What should I do? Oh yes, I'll contact Colonel Lester first," said Britney. However, she wanted to die when she saw that the signal had been jammed.
A thump sounded outside the room. Britney looked at the screen on the door and saw that the pilot had been decapitated. A man with a cigarette in his mouth was standing in the living room. As if he sensed that someone was looking at him in the room, he turned around and looked over.
Britney was so frightened that she fell to the floor. The psionic strength exuded by the man was extremely powerful.
She crawled to the bed and said, "Ms. Miller, our pilot has been killed. The flying car can't fly itself right now. We don't even have any signals. We—We're doomed."
Then, she muttered to herself, "I've let you down, Colonel Lester. I failed to take care of Ms. Miller. I only hope I can work for you again in another lifetime."
Daphne was speechless as she lay on the bed. It was not even over, yet Britney had already given up.
She immediately called out to the system in her mind. Fortunately, the system responded this time.
"Quick! Think of a way to transport us to a safe location. Otherwise, your host is going to die, and nobody is going to complete the missions for you," said Daphne.
"The person outside is the father of your child! If you play the sympathy card, your life will be saved," replied the system.
It went offline upon saying that.
What a lazy system. It did not even wish to help at all.
Daphne thought of the crazy man from that night, and she felt a little scared. However, for the sake of her mission and her family, she would fight till the end.
After another loud bang, the bedroom door went flying.
The first thing Daphne saw was a pair of shiny leather shoes. Then, a pair of slender legs stopped in front of her.
He… He was much scarier than that night.
Britney was restrained by Herkoen's subordinate.
He smirked and said, "You're really lucky. You didn't die on my bed, and you weren't killed by the man I sent. But you won't be as lucky this time."
"Don't be so sure. I might not have luck, but I have your child," Daphne thought.
She pinched herself in the back, and her hands finally stopped trembling. Then, she grabbed a dagger and pointed it at her belly.
"D-Don't come closer, or I'll kill your child," she said.
Herkoen sneered. "Do you not know my capabilities, you foolish female? My psionic strength is at Rank SSS. It's impossible for me to have a child."
His subordinate had been looking indifferent ever since they came into the room, but even he smiled a little upon hearing that. It was as if he was laughing at Daphne.
Daphne had found her confidence, so she was no longer afraid anymore. "Well, what a coincidence. I just checked my fertility last month, and I'm a Rank SSS+. That'll be enough for me to be pregnant with your child, will it not?"
"What did you say?" Herkoen's smile stiffened.
