Maeve spun around abruptly at the sound behind her.
The maid, startled by Maeve's sharp reaction, froze before asking, "Ms. Scott, why are you here on the second floor?"
"I-I came to find the thing Lyra left behind," Maeve stammered.
"Something of Ms. Jansen's?" The maid stepped further into the room, her expression puzzled. "I don't think she left anything."
"And how would you know?"
"Ms. Jansen wasn't here long that day," the maid explained. "I even checked the room when I cleaned up afterward, and nothing was left behind."
"You were here that night?" Maeve pressed.
The maid nodded at her question. "I was on duty that night. The next morning, I noticed her room hadn't been touched, so I quickly checked and tidied it up.
