"Maybe we have different childhoods," Linda said.
She had spent most of her childhood with John, and being with her elders was generally a positive experience. The only downside was not being able to enjoy junk food, as her elders considered anything with chili powder to be unhealthy.
"If I had lived with my parents, I probably wouldn't have had access to those things, either. But I was raised by my grandparents."
Lina's family was well-off, but they had a strong preference for boys.
Being a girl, Lina wasn't valued much and was handed over to her grandparents shortly after birth. Later, she went abroad for her studies and work. If her grandparents hadn't passed away, her parents might never have known that she had been living abroad for years.
