Chapter 12

Yvonne did not expect him to kiss her just because he wanted to. She slapped him across the face without hesitation. Not even in Zachary’s wildest dreams would he have expected Yvonne, who was usually so meek and quiet, to take any action against him. He did not have time to avoid and was slapped squarely on the cheek. He had never been slapped ever in his life. He immediately let go of Yvonne and threatened in a fierce tone, “Do you not want your job anymore?” Yvonne knew that as the beloved third son of the Quimby family, Zachary had never been slapped by a woman in his life. This would mean she had just dug herself a grave for slapping him across the face. There was no way Zachary was going to forgive her. She decided to go all-in now that the worst had happened. “Hey, Quimby, I’ve been sick of you for a long time! I’m fine not having my job anymore. There will always be some other place that will take me in. I quit!’ Just as she finished saying that, she unzipped her bag and threw the company phone and car keys that Zachary had given her onto the table before leaving. As Zachary caressed his stinging cheek and watched her hobble out the door, a smirk appeared on his face. ‘Yvonne Yates, you won’t get away so easily. Just wait and see!’ Yvonne was walking to the bus stop after leaving Quimby Tower when her phone rang. It was a call from her neighbor. “Yvonne, your uncle fainted and had been sent to the hospital. Hurry to the hospital!” Shocked by the news, Yvonne immediately hailed a cab and rushed to the hospital. When she arrived, she learned that her uncle was being resuscitated in the emergency room. Her neighbor stood and waited by the door. Yvonne immediately hurried over and asked, “How’s the situation?” “I’m not sure. The doctors are tending to him now. It doesn’t seem to be going well.” “What should we do?” Yvonne could not stand still as if there were ants in her pants. She waited in the waiting room anxiously for some time before a doctor came out from behind the doors. “Who is the patient’s family?” “I am,” Yvonne said as she hurried forward. “The patient is not in a good condition. He has uremia and requires a kidney transplant…” Yvonne felt her vision closing in, and she had to hold on to a nearby wall to balance herself. The doctor looked at her sympathetically. “What’s most important now is to find a donor. You should go pay the hospitalization fees and examination fees.” Yvonne’s heart was heavy as she walked over to pay the fees. She was the textbook example of a series of unfortunate events. She had just lost her job, and her uncle had been diagnosed with a disease like this… After settling the fees, Yvonne decided to go home and pack some things for the uncle. Just as she walked out the hospital’s doors, she crashed right into someone, causing the other person to drop everything. “Don’t you have eyes to watch where you’re going?” The other person said angrily at her. Yvonne hurriedly apologized. “Sorry, I’m so sorry!” As she apologized, she bent down to help pick everything back up. The other person felt somewhat embarrassed and took a good look at her. “Yvonne?” Yvonne lifted her head and looked over. “Sandra?” “Where the hell were you? You indecent woman! You never bothered calling even once in the last three years! I was so worried!” Sandra stopped picking her things up and punched Yvonne. Naturally, two old friends who had not seen each other in more than two years had a lot to catch up on. Sandra Willis’ temper was just the same as before. Back in school, they were the closest of friends. Upon graduation, Sandra had chosen to further her studies overseas while Yvonne settled down to get married. Yvonne had vanished quietly after Jackson had divorced her. Sandra had been trying to get in touch with Yvonne since she returned home, but everyone she asked had no idea where Yvonne was. Who would have expected them to meet in such a coincidence? Sandra had become an up-and-coming screenwriter at a television station, and her eyes lit up when she heard that Yvonne was job-hunting. “Yvonne, I’m planning to launch a reality dating show, and we need some female guest stars for the pre-launch campaign. Why don’t you come act as your female guest?” “I can’t!” Yvonne shook her head. “Why not? You’re so pretty. Do you know how much attention you would garner by just standing on the stage? I want to keep the good stuff for people I know, so surely you left out of the good things. I’ve got so many sponsors for this show, and you’ll get paid a high salary daily. Most importantly, it’s easy money. You’ll understand once you read the information I’ll send you later.” Yvonne was starting to get tempted. “Really?” “Of course!” Sandra grinned as she dialed a number into her phone, “I’ve already found one female guest. You guys only need to find another five of them.” Sandra was a person of her word and immediately gave Yvonne a giant pack of information all about the reality show so that she could go home and read through them.
