Just as the two of them had finished tidying up their belongings, a sudden thud could be heard from the outside wall of the yard as if something heavy had fallen from a high place onto the ground.
They exchanged glances and sensed the gravity of the situation on each other's faces.
Due to the recent unrest, they made sure to keep the courtyard door locked around the clock. To prevent anyone from scaling the wall, Annabelle even set up a small trap which would cause something to drop if the courtyard door and wall were touched by an intruder.
The object that happened to fall to the ground was apparently what they had used as a warning.
"Sweetheart, stay here while I go check." Annabelle softly rubbed Lucille's head and prepared to go outside with an ax in hand.
Lucille held on to her and said, "Mother, I'll go."
If someone had really intruded into their yard, with Annabelle's physical condition, they would not be able to hold back the suspect.
