ANNA. I stare at the phone for a long time through puffy eyes. My gaze drifts to the pregnancy test results. I hug my knees to my chest and my body trembles as I start sobbing again. The appointment with the OB-GYN is in thirty minutes, but I can't move. I keep thinking...*What if it's a little girl?* I've always wanted a daughter, a little sister for Finn. Maybe she'd get him to react and even yell more often. Maybe she'd distract him from the unhappiness in his parent's marriage. Even now, he sits, studying his book and repeating words he doesn't understand to himself, not wanting to bother me with it. He suddenly looks over to where I'm seated on the kitchen floor, and I manage a big smile. He doesn't smile back. "You're crying again, mommy. Your eyes... they're very big." I laugh, wiping my eyes. "How big?" "Like...like donuts!" My laughter becomes a giggle. "You're mean. Wonder who you got that from." His eyes are wide and innocent as he whispers, "Not Dad. I never want to
