Pale with fear, Esther was comforted by Felix, who whispered in her ear to calm down. She gestured for silence, fearing that any noise would attract the black-clad men's attention outside the corridor.
Esther felt a sense of gratitude that they hadn't run out into the open field earlier. They would have become easy targets in the waist-high wild grass if they had. Worry flickered in Esther's bright eyes as she looked down at the dust on her white shoes.
