Chapter 81  Resurfacing Shadows

Lucas drove quickly through the roads, scared to death. He had to see Emma for himself to be sure that she was safe because he couldn't believe it. When he rushed into his house, she was lying on the couch in the living room, looking pale and weak. Seeing how weak she looked broke his heart. "Emma!" Lucas yelled and ran to her aid. He carefully took her into his arms and felt a rush of protectiveness go through him. Emma had a hard time sitting up because her eyes were tired. She said, "Lucas..." in a weak voice. Lucas's concern was clear in his words as he tightened his grip on her. "How did you get here?" What happened to you?" Emma gave a small shake of her head. "I don't know... someone... something in my drink..." She had trouble staying awake, so her words got lost. Lucas picked Emma up in his arms when he realized she needed medical help. "Hang in there, Emma. I'm going to the hospital with you." When Lucas got to the hospital, he paced tensely outside the emergency room.
