Chapter 5: So What?

The car stopped in front of the bakery and Winfred got out of the car with a black umbrella and walked into the shop. There had been a number of people who had come to take shelter from the rain. When they saw someone entering the shop, they all stepped out of the way. However, when they saw Winfred’s face clearly, they all showed a look of fear. At this time, two children were playing and chasing after each other in the shop. Suddenly, they bumped into Winfred. When they looked up and saw Winfred’s face, they were so frightened that they cried out and hid back in their mother’s arms. The mothers held the children tightly. One of them reprimanded angrily, “Don’t come out and scare people if you look so ugly, okay? You scared the children!” The surrounding people were also talking about this, all of them criticizing Winfred for coming out to scare others with this terrifying appearance. “With such an appearance, even if he has to come out, he should wear a mask! How could he scare people like this?” “You’re right! He looks so terrifying! No wonder the children are crying! They may have a psychological shadow from now on!” “I’ve heard that the uglier the person is, the more likely he’s a pervert. What if this is a pervert and we irritate him?” Hearing these people’s accusations, Winfred took a cold glance around expressionlessly and ignored. However, at this moment, a petite figure rushed in from outside and reached her arms to protect Winfred behind, completely disregarding her soaked clothes dripping a puddle of water on the floor. “You guys are too much!” This person was no other than Lainey. She was saddened to learn that her beloved father was actually bent on her death, but she figured it out after a while. Since others didn’t like her, why should she feel sorry for herself because of this? She still had her mum, and many people who liked her, so she was going to hang in there for these people! After thinking it through, Lainey found the bakery not far away. She hadn’t eaten breakfast and lunch yet and she had long been hungry. Therefore, she decided to go in to buy a bread to fill the stomach. However, she was surprised to find Winfred being “bullied” by these people as soon as she came to the door. The natural sense of justice made Lainey decide to stand up to protect Winfred. “My husband is ugly, so what? Has he eaten your food or spend your money?” “Is he your husband? Since you know he’s ugly, why didn’t you keep an eye on him? It’s your fault for letting him run out and scare others’ children!” Lainey was petite and looked young, so those who kicked up a fuss didn’t take her seriously at all and mocked her and Winfred blatantly. “That’s true! He scared the hell out of my kid. He might leave my kid a psychological shadow. Apologize!” When one child’s mother saw that other people speaking for her, she became arrogant and bossy as well, and her words became even meaner. “Don’t go out if you’re ugly! Why don’t you just stay home?” “Shut up!” Lainey was furious. Standing with her hands on her hips, she looked like a mad little tiger. “It’s obviously your kid running around inside the shop! This is a bakery, not a playground! How dare you accuse my husband with your own child’s uneducated behaviour? I’m ashamed of you!” “You!” The child’s mother was so angry that she couldn’t utter any word as she pointed at Lainey. “What? Who says ugly people can’t go out? But this shop has a rule that one can’t run around to avoid bumping into others here! Even if the child has no courtesy, are you uneducated? Or can’t you read?” Lainey angrily pointed at the slogan on the wall of the shop and questioned, leaving the child’s mother completely at a loss how to retort. The others looked at the sign and recalled what happened just now, and everyone fell into silence. It was true that these two kids ran around and bumped into Winfred, and they deserved to be scared. It was not Winfred’s fault. Seeing that these people stopped speaking, Lainey turned to look at Winfred, “Honey, let’s buy bread!” Winfred smiled, “Okay.” Having lived for thirty years, it was actually the first time that Winfred had been protected like this by someone, so he was amazed and touched in his heart when he saw what Lainey had done just now. Other women who had seen him were scared away, but Lainey said he was her husband in public without fearing the gaze of others. What an interesting little girl! Winfred picked two bags of bread and a small cake and brought Lainey to the cashier desk. After they settled the bill, Vernon came in from outside with an umbrella and said respectfully, “Mr. Sloan, Mrs. Sloan, please.” Vernon had just watched the process of how Lainey protected her husband when he was outside, and approved her identity almost instantly. No one had ever defended Mr. Sloan like this. Miss Warren was indeed the first. Lainey straightened her back and pulled Winfred out of the bakery in full view of everyone. Vernon held the umbrella to protect Winfred and Lainey to get into the car, and then returned to the driver’s seat. At this time, those people were shocked to find that the ugly man that they had been against actually owned a Maybach! In the car. As soon as Lainey got into the car, she shook off Winfred’s hand. Her hand was full of sweat. Embarrassed, she hurriedly tried to dry her hand with her clothes. However, she found that her clothes were all wet, and even the seat was wetted by her. “I’m sorry.” Lainey had forgotten that she had got soaked in the rain. “Why do you say sorry?” Raising his eyebrows, Winfred asked. Before he entered the bakery, he saw Lainey squatting by the roadside sadly. Yet only a short time later he saw her energetically stand up for him, and now she told him she was sorry. Winfred wondered how Lainey’s moods could change so quickly. “I dirtied your car.” Lainey apologized awkwardly. “Well, how about I get out first?” “You don’t have to.” Winfred stopped Lainey and took a clean towel from the back and gave it to her, “Give yourself a wipe! Don’t catch a cold.” Lainey gratefully thanked Winfred. Winfred raised his eyebrows. “Thank me for what? Honey, you just defended my dignity in front of so many people, but now I can only do this little thing for you. So what’s there to be thanked for?” Well, he had thought that Lainey might have some bad intentions as she was sent to him by his father. But after seeing how she had just defended him, he recognized her as his wife. Hearing Winfred call her Honey, Lainey blushed immediately. “It was all due to the circumstances. I didn’t mean it.” “It’s okay, I kinda like this title. Call me like that from now on.” Winfred said faintly. Lainey’s face turned even redder. She had just called Winfred Honey in order to add to her momentum. It was so awkward to hear him mention it again on purpose. Lainey raised her head to meet Winfred’s deep eyes, which was deep and charming like a boundless starry sky.
