Chapter 2: Are You Really Not Afraid of Death?

“Lie down.” Winfred commanded again coldly. Biting her lower lip, Lainey obediently did as she was told to lie down. Standing in front of the big bed and looking at Lainey condescendingly, Winfred suddenly threw himself on top of her, who was so scared that she closed her eyes. Lainey could feel that Winfred’s big hands were rough. She trembled violently all over her body. She told herself not to be afraid, but she really couldn’t help it! “Nice, you’re pure. But you’re not the cup of my tea. You can go back now!” As Winfred said this coldly, he had already got up and was about to leave. There was no change of Winfred’s expression as if he had been weighing an object. Lainey anxiously opened her eyes, and the tears in her eyes rolled down. “Is there something I didn’t do well enough? Mr. Sloan, I will definitely satisfy you. Please don’t kick me out, okay?” Being driven away meant that she had failed, and Lainey couldn’t bear the consequences. Perhaps it was Lainey’s tears that moved Winfred, who stared intently at her face and suddenly asked, “Are you really not afraid of death?” Hearing that, Lainey widened her eyes. Who could be not afraid of death? “Haven’t you heard of how my previous few wives ran away?” There was a rumor in Swindon. That was, although the third young master of the Sloan family, Winfred, was only thirty years old, six women who married him had run away. Without exception, all of them were scared away by Winfred on the wedding night. Those women only had one thing to say about Winfred, namely, he was bad-tempered ugly man who killed as long as he was dissatisfied about something. They were all lucky to have a narrow escape. It was because of this rumor that no woman ever dared to marry Winfred, until Lainey appeared. Lainey was sent to Winfred’s bed by Vicente Sloan, Winfred’s father. She knew exactly what she was about to face, but now she couldn’t go back on her words since she had agreed. “I’ve heard of it, but I’m not afraid! Don’t worry, Mr. Sloan, I’ll be good! Please don’t kick me out, okay?” If Lainey left, she would be breaking her agreement with Vicente, and the Sloan family would no longer give financial support to the Warren family. For the sake of her mother, she must stay. Winfred stared at her coldly for a long time before finally speaking, “You can stay here tonight, but leave first thing in the morning! I don’t need you.” The old fox was probably at his wits’ end, or he wouldn’t have sent such a little girl over. He’d be a beast to do something to such a young girl. The old fox was underestimating his moral compass. Lainey let out a sigh of relief. Although Winfred was horrible, she must stay for the sake of the Warren family. Winfred did not stay in the room, but went to the study next door. The computer screen showed a picture of Lainey and her background. Lainey’s entire resume added up to less than five lines. It was not too much to describe Lainey as a blank sheet of paper. How in the world did the old fox find the Warren family, and actually managed to get them to agree to marry such an innocent daughter to him, a murderer that everyone was scared of? Those women had experienced what Lainey encountered tonight in the past, and they ran as fast as they could after the narrow escape. After so many women ran away, Winfred was known as the maniac. Because of this bad reputation, Winfred successfully refused a lot of women sent by his father. Yet tonight Lainey’s courage was out of his expectation. Thinking of Lainey’s performance just now, Winfred rubbed his chin with his index finger, seemingly recalling that delicate milk-like smooth touch. If they weren’t a little too far apart in age, it would seem to be a good idea to consider being with Lainey.
