Lainey understood what was being said.
The fire escape where she had the accident happened to be perfectly devoid of surveillance cameras, and no one saw what happened. Therefore, they concluded that she had accidentally fallen down the fire escape herself.
If she had died on the spot, this might have been the only conclusion to end the case.

Lainey looked at Winfred firmly and said, "Jayda pushed me down."
"What did you say? It was her?"
Vernon was shocked. "Isn't she your sister? How could she do such a ruthless thing?"
