Chapter 44
Quentin leaned in as if to kiss me.
I closed my eyes, silently begging for help.
Suddenly, warm liquid splattered all over my face and body, and an overwhelming weight nearly crushed me.
I dared not open my eyes as Quentin’s head rested against my face.
Then my restraints were released, and I was dropped onto a wooden board—a searing pain making me wince.
Around me, a chaotic mix of sounds—cursing, pleading, crying, heavy footsteps, and the clatter of machinery—swirled into a confused blur.
Then, silence fell.
I felt an unexpected lightness as someone removed the burly man draped over me, zipped up my trousers, and straightened my clothes. Soon after, I was lifted into an embrace.
I recognized the familiar hug, the comforting scent, and the soothing voice as it whispered, “I'm sorry, baby—I’m late. But I'm here.”
Trembling, I finally found the courage to open my eyes.
