I could feel the subtle yet undeniable stares from the other women—some full of envy, some laced with jealousy, and a few silently warning me off. Swallowing nervously, I turned to William. “William…”
“Hmm? What was that?” he asked, leaning in so his ear was almost touching my lips.
My cheeks burned, but I edged closer and whispered, “Look at all these women tonight. Maybe one of them would be a good match for you?”
Instantly, William’s face darkened. “I’m not considering that right now.”
“But… they’re all looking at me like they want to devour me. They’ve totally got the wrong idea,” I said, pressing my lips together as apprehension tinged my voice.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m here. Nothing’s going to happen to you.” William patted my shoulder reassuringly before straightening up.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that hostility was building around us. With a helpless sigh, I silently prayed the night would end soon.
