Chapter 8 Half of It Belongs to Me
After eating the breakfast Fiona had prepared for her, Marjorie picked out the least flashiest Ferrari she could find in the garage and set out for work.
She spent a peaceful morning at the film production company. All the people who had gossiped about her the day before seemed to have disappeared. For some reason, she found everything seemed to be going exceptionally smoothly.
Albert, the man she had met the day before, did not pester her anymore.
After some thought, Marjorie came to the conclusion that money was the true answer. After all, one had to have funding to be able to chase after one's dreams. Otherwise, they would starve to death during the process.
When lunchtime rolled around, Marjorie turned down everyone's invitation for lunch and instead drove to a nearby shopping mall where Meredith had been waiting for her.
She parked the car and went up to the highest floor. The topmost floor of the building was home to an exclusive restaurant that served only the elite. Marjorie could only manage to get in here because of Stephen's connections.
"Hello, Ms. Marjorie. Your friend is already here. She's waiting in room 888." The waiter smiled as he took Marjorie's bag from her and led her to the room.
Meredith was flipping through the menu when she heard a noise. She lifted her head and saw Marjorie entering.
That day, Marjorie was wearing a pink power suit that made her look both alluring and professional.
"Oh my God, is that you, Marjorie? You're so gorgeous! If I were a man, I'd be all over you right now!" Meredith exclaimed. Then, for good measure, she plucked the rose out of the vase on the table, got on one knee, and offered it to Marjorie jokingly.
"Thank you, my handsome knight. I am yours for the taking."
The two of them burst into laughter.
After ordering their food, Meredith finally cast her the question she had been wondering. "What happened last night, Marjorie? I couldn't believe it when you told me you were moving back home this morning. Have you decided not to divorce that bastard? I know it's not my place to say this, but I really hope you'd divorce him."
"Meredith, it's not that I don't want to get a divorce, but Stephen hasn't agreed to it yet. I'm sure you can understand where I'm coming from. However, the good news is, he finally agreed to let me continue voice acting."
"Does he know you're Bluebell now?" Meredith stared at her in disbelief, then pressed her down against the couch, demanding for an explanation.
"Yes, he knows I'm Bluebell now. When I went to audition yesterday, he just so happened to be there and found out the truth. He tried to ban me from voice acting!" Marjorie explained nonchalantly. It was as though she was not describing something that had happened to her but to someone else instead.
All of a sudden, the door slid open.
It was none other than Stephen, followed by a woman who was covered from head to toe with a face mask and a pair of giant sunglasses.
Marjorie and Meredith finally realized who it was after she took off her sunglasses.
Carolyn!
"Hello, Marjorie, I didn't think I'd see you here." Carolyn's face was as pale as a ghost. She looked as though she had barely escaped death.
It would appear that she had successfully managed to summon Stephen by feigning suicide, or had it been real?
He must have used up his boiling lust on her instead of Marjorie!
At the thought of this, Marjorie could not help feeling bad for Carolyn. Did she look pale as a result of the attempted suicide or because of Stephen?
"Ms. Carolyn, please do not pretend like we know each other. I'm not one to pretend to be someone I'm not. After all, unlike you, I don't enjoy being in the media's attention." Marjorie took no notice of Carolyn's attitude. There was no way she would admit defeat to her own mistress!
"I've never pretended to be someone I'm not."
"Is that so?" Marjorie lifted her chin defiantly. "Did I hallucinate about the events of last night then? Who was the person who feigned suicide just to seduce my husband? What are you doing here anyway? Did you come all the way here just to spite me?"
She stared coldly at the woman across from her. She knew Stephen would never come to a restaurant like this. The only explanation was that Stephen and Carolyn had followed her here.
Stephen glanced at Carolyn with a rather accusing look, secretly cursing her.
"Is this why you insisted on coming here? You wanted to spite Marjorie?" Stephen had put two and two together and finally figured out why Carolyn had been so insistent on dining there.
"Please leave. This is my personal space, and I'm not in the mood to entertain either of you. In fact, Ms. Carolyn, the man next to you belonged to me first. I didn't know you liked chewing other people's old gum, but since you want it, I shall give it to you. Enjoy!"
Marjorie had been one of the star debaters of her school when she was younger, and this was evident in how she shot down Carolyn effortlessly.
"Other people's old gum? Are you implying that I'm an object?" Stephen had never seen Marjorie behave so snarkily before. She had always been soft and gentle with him, but she was hiding her other traits. After all, she was one of the top graduates from the best film academies in the country. Of course, she would be skilled at disguising her true self.
"You! " Stephen sputtered.
Marjorie stared at him with a taunting look. Meredith could not help sighing at this exchange. These two were like cat and mouse!
"Stephen, I think you should leave with your mistress."
"If I remember correctly, I'm the one with the membership to this restaurant," Stephen declared as he plopped down at the head of the table, staring right across at Marjorie. Although three people were there, he seemed to only have eyes for her.
"Yes, I know that, but don't husband and wife share all their assets? In a way, half of the membership belongs to me." Marjorie sat down, dragging Meredith alongside her, and glared at Stephen.
Carolyn was the only one who remained standing, but she looked so pale she seemed like she would faint at any minute.
"Ms. Carolyn, if you may, please excuse us. You're intruding on a couple and their friend's lunch here," Marjorie said pointedly, implying that Carolyn was the odd one out.
"Mr. Stephen?" Carolyn turned to gaze at Stephen.
"Ms. Carolyn, please sit down. I wouldn't want to see you faint, lest it spoil our appetites. After all, this restaurant is renowned for its exquisite food, and it would be a waste to leave without eating anything," Marjorie added.
The color drained from Carolyn's face, but her eyes seeped with hatred.
Despite having her good spirits spoiled by the two uninvited guests, Marjorie still enjoyed the meal very much.
"Shall we go drinking later?" she asked Meredith.
"Sure! I have a handsome friend who I think will be perfect for you!" Meredith replied.
Stephen scowled upon hearing this. The look on his face was so cold that even Marjorie felt chills going down her spine.
