365 RUN AWAY FROM HOME
Caden wrestled with the doorknob, a frustrated grunt escaping his lips. It wouldn't budge. Panic clawed at his throat, hot and unwelcome. He jiggled the handle again, this time twisting it with more force. "Come on," he muttered, the urgency clear in his voice.
He glanced back at his overflowing duffel bag sprawled on the bed. Clothes, a half-eaten granola bar, a dog-eared copy of "Huckleberry Finn" – everything he needed for his grand escape. Escape from the oppressive rules of his parents, Ethan and Madison. This morning, fueled by teenage angst and a simmering rebellion, he'd packed his life into that canvas bag.
The muffled thud of Caden's fist thumping against the back door echoed like a death knell through the quiet house. Madison, drawn by the jarring sound, rounded the corner just as his frustrated yell ripped through the air. There he stood, face contorted in a mask of anger and hurt, suitcase clutched tightly in his hand, the flimsy door a mocking barrier between them.
