Ari settled Elodie into a cosy wicker table under a vibrantly coloured parasol.
He disappeared briefly, returning with a selection of delectable local delicacies – steaming bowls of pissaladière, a local tart packed with caramelized onions and anchovies, and plump Socca pancakes dusted with aromatic herbs.
As they devoured the delicious treats, Elodie stole an occasional glance at Ari.
He seemed more relaxed here, a faint smile playing on his lips as he watched the vibrant tableau unfolding before them.
His smile reminded her of Adriano.
‘You know,’ she cleared her throat, ‘you and your brother look nothing alike, but you are both equally charming. And he was really nice.’
Ari’s smile broadened. ‘I’m glad you think that way.’
‘And your father. He was a real gentleman, too.’
Ari’s smile faded.
He gazed off into the far distance, his eyes troubled as if haunted by some unpleasant memory.
Elodie pressed on. ‘I’m surprised you don’t talk about them often. You have a lovely family.’
