Alston let out a cold laugh, his eyes narrowing with a hint of disdain that was hard to ignore. He had already told Cecilia the previous night that he doesn't hit women, and no matter what, she couldn't change his principles.
"Go back," Cecilia said quietly, taking a deep breath.
Monroe looked aggrieved but didn't dare say much. He glanced at Alston with resentment and muttered, "I..."
"Then I'll go back first. If he bullies you, call me. I'll..." Monroe's voice was low and fierce, as if forced out from his throat, "I'll kill him!"
Monroe left.
Alston, however, continued to play with Gladys. He held a finely peeled apple in one hand and a sharp scalpel in the other, cutting a piece of fruit and offering it to Gladys.
Cecilia stood still, her face expressionless, as cold and lifeless as a mannequin. "Now that we're alone, can you tell me what you really want?"
"I'm not here for anything other than to have lunch with my daughter," Alston replied.
