Gladys, who was about to speak, paused and suddenly seemed to realize something. "Oh, I get it now," she said, a light of understanding dawning in her eyes. "Daddy, you miss Mom, don’t you! You don’t want to get divorced; you want Mom to come back and have lunch with you, right?"
Alston almost threw his phone in frustration. His handsome face turned various shades of red and green as he struggled with his emotions. Finally, he pursed his lips and said, "Just call your mom and ask her to come back for lunch, okay?"
Gladys nodded. She remembered Cecilia's phone number and dialed it with her small, white fingers. The call was cut off after just two rings.
