"Don't you trust me?" Cecilia asked sharply. "What's there for Marian to worry about? Marian might not have kids, but she's still better off than Cecilia. Gladys just had surgery, and Cecilia couldn't stay put at home; she had to go out! Who knows what she's up to out there? If anyone's unreliable, it's Cecilia."
Alston sneered and then heard Cecilia's voice again, "Is Alston there? Put him on."
Marian pursed her lips, sounding a bit aggrieved, "The phone's on speaker. Just talk, Cecilia. Alston can hear you."
As if Cecilia hadn't just mocked Marian, she spoke directly, "Are you on your way?"
Alston affirmed.
Cecilia's voice carried a hint of displeasure, "Alston, you should've told me when I left today!"
"Oh, really? And what about when you left without telling me?" Alston retorted.
"I had some personal matters to attend to, and you're taking my daughter!"
It was clear Cecilia was getting upset. But throughout the call, her voice remained subdued, almost whispered.
