Quam expertly steered the conversation back towards lighter topics, regaling Mariana with humorous anecdotes from his latest project. His earlier seriousness vanished, replaced by his usual charming demeanor. The remaining time flew by in a flurry of laughter and lighthearted chatter.
As their plates emptied, Quam cleared his throat, a touch hesitantly. "So, about getting you home," he began. "This neighbourhood can get a little… enthusiastic when it comes to my presence." He winked, but a flicker of concern remained in his eyes.
Mariana smiled appreciatively. "I appreciate the offer, Quam, truly. But I think I can manage hailing a cab myself. No need to attract any unwanted attention."
A flicker of disappointment crossed Quam's features, though he quickly masked it with a smile. "Alright then, if that's what you prefer. Just be careful, okay?"
"Always," Mariana replied, her voice firm yet filled with warmth.
