Chapter 32: Unravelling Truths in the Shadows
Mariana stirred, the remnants of a restless sleep clinging to her like cobwebs. Reaching for the bedside table, she fumbled for the glass of water left there by a solicitous steward.
A glance at the clock revealed the late afternoon sun streaming through the window. How long had she been asleep? She vaguely recalled the doctor's visit and the blessed relief of the painkillers finally taking hold.
A frown creased her brow as she propped herself up against the pillows. The silence in the room was heavy. The stewards had been attentive, their movements quiet and efficient as they changed her bed linens and brought her a tray of fruits.
Just as they dropped the tray, Dr. Sanchez knocked as he entered the room. He had also returned for a brief check-up.
"Feeling a bit better today, Mrs. Alarcão?" he inquired, taking her pulse and peering into her eyes.
Mariana managed a weak smile. "Yes, doctor, thank you. Much better."
