Ruby watched as Amanda walked into the back room before turning back to the young man in front of the counter and saying, “Hudson.” Hudson nodded and said, “Ruby.” She let out a small sigh as she shook her head. “Looks like you’ve got your work cut out for you with that one.” “Yep.” “Is she …?” “Mm-hmm.” Ruby let out another sigh before she finished ringing up his order. Before he walked over to the pickup counter, Ruby said to him, “Take good care of her, Hudson.” Hudson looked around the café and to the back room before he leaned closer to Ruby. “Ruby, make sure that you are being mindful of your surroundings. There was an animal attack last night, and a girl was hurt pretty bad.” Ruby nodded and kept her cool. “Alright, Hudson.” “And Ruby?” “Yeah?” “I’ll be sure to take care of Amanda.” Ruby gave him a small smile as she handed him his drink and he walked out the door. Ruby let out a sigh. Amanda peeked her head out from the back room. “Is he gone yet?”
