Chapter Thirteen

Sullen It’d been worth a shot to run. Now it’d come back to bite her in the ass because she couldn’t stop thinking about Roan naked. Not to mention her wolf’s constant commentary about his wolf and how much she wanted to run with him. Roan’s body was chiseled. Not only was his face sharp with masculine edges, but his body looked carved from stone as well. Her wolf had been completely pissed when he stepped back into his underwear for their ride home. It was a relief for Sullen. Sullen banged her head against the cool glass of the passenger side window. Maybe if she hit herself hard enough she would fall back into reality, and wake up from this nightmare. “Ah, don’t do that, little fox. I like your head the way it is,” Roan said from the driver’s seat. Sullen ignored his stare and glanced out of the window. The woods turned to a dirt road that led toward their pack land. Driving up, it looked like farmland with fenced-in pastures but the longer you drove, you realized it was a little community. Their pack house was large, two stories, with individual houses, spread around the grounds. Sullen assumed those were for mated wolves. Roan parked in the driveway of the large pack house and turned to look at her. “What?” Sullen asked after several minutes of him staring. Roan slid his tongue across his teeth. “We’re about to meet my pack. I can sense their eagerness now. They expect me to bring back a willing Luna, not you. I need you to swallow your pride for a few minutes until we can get to my room and talk. Can you do that?” Sullen lifted a dark brow at him. “You’re asking me to do what you want after you forced me to come here with you? Seriously?” “Dead serious,” he said, reaching over, it was as if he realized she wasn’t fully dressed. “Here.” He grabbed his t-shirt he’d gathered on his way back to his Jeep. “Put this on. It’s long enough to keep you covered.” Sullen didn’t want to put it on, because it smelled like him and it made her insides melt. But meeting his pack naked as the day she was born sounded worse. She slipped into his shirt, while he got out and walked around to open her door. Without any shoes, she walked around the Jeep and stared at the windows in the front of the house. The blinds moved, which meant someone watched them. Creeps. Roan stopped beside her and braced his palm against her lower back. She glared at him. “For show, little fox. You can stand two minutes of my touch, right?” Sullen went to tell him where to shove that hand when the front door opened. Roan stiffened, and Sullen followed his line of sight. It was a shewolf. Blonde. Very pretty. Very irritated, though she wore a tight-lipped smile. Roan cursed under his breath as she moved closer to them. Sullen smiled, crossing her arms over her chest, she watched Roan grow more uncomfortable. “Roan,” the blonde said, “you didn’t tell any of us you were leaving. You just left—” Roan cleared his throat. “Since when do I report to you, Whitney?” Whitney’s face turned red, and Sullen's wolf ate it up. Whitney’s steely blue gaze shifted toward Sullen. “Who do we have here, Roan? Aren’t you going to introduce me to our new pack member?” Roan’s hand curled around Sullen's hip, drawing her closer, in a protective way that made her thighs ache. “This is my mate, Sullen.” Whitney looked pissed and shocked at once. Sullen felt herself growing irritated. Whitney cleared her throat. “Are you sure she’s your mate, Roan?” “You’re asking your alpha if he’s sure he found his mate?” Sullen asked, unexpectedly. She hadn’t meant to say it but it slipped. “Do you question your alpha a lot? Because where I come from, we don’t question ours at all.” Roan chuckled and it soothed down Sullen’s back. “What’s so funny?” she asked. He shrugged. “We need to get inside, Whitney.” “I’m sorry,” she said, reaching out to give him a hug. Sullen lost it. She hated herself for it, but she couldn’t control herself. She launched forward and knocked Whitney backward on her ass. “Don’t touch him!” Whitney scurried up and toward the pack house stairs. The doors opened, and a burly guy walked outside with an amused look on his face. “Whitney, get inside!” he barked. She didn’t say a word. Good, Sullen’s wolf said. Touching our mate like that. You should have gone for the throat. “For an almost touch?” Sullen mumbled to herself. “Yeah right, what is this? The middle ages?” Roan pointed toward the burly guy as he walked over. “This is Jacob, my beta. And this is Sullen … my mate.” Sullen fought the urge to snarl. She didn’t have to be nice for Roan’s sake, but maybe it would help her get away quicker. Jacob eyed her and slowly offered her a handshake as if she would bite him. “Nice to meet you.” He turned toward Roan with a smirk on his face that Sullen didn’t like. “Most of the pack is waiting inside. Do you want me to tell them you’ll hold a meeting later?” Roan glanced down at Sullen’s narrowed eyes. “Yes. We’ll take the side entrance to my room. We need to talk before she's introduced to the pack. But before we go, what is the status of the rogues?” Jacob made a face. “They’re secure if that’s what you are asking. None of them are talking. Well, like I said, they are talking but not anything we want to hear.” Roan nodded. “I’ll deal with it when I get finished—” “Your security must suck if you have all these rogues traipsing over onto your land.” Jacob’s eyes widened, and Sullen shrugged her shoulders at him. Roan chuckled and took a calming breath. “Right, because I should take the girl that hates living in a pack’s advice about my pack. I’ll get right on that.” Roan tugged Sullen toward the side of the house while Jacob went to ward off the hounds. Roan had a side entrance that led them up a spiral staircase. There was a lot of chatter from down the hallway, but Roan’s path to the second floor avoided all of it. Sullen was glad. She wanted to get this chat over with so she could get dressed, and go see her delusional mother. Roan’s room was at the end of a long hallway with giant wooden doors built for royalty. He opened the door and Sullen walked inside. His scent warmed her from head to toe. Her wolf tossed so many visions of things she wanted him to do to them on his bed. Sullen attempted to shake them off, but before she could stop herself, she asked, “So, are you sleeping with the blonde slut downstairs?” Roan shut the door behind him and stopped mid-step. “Why, Sullen? Are you afraid there won’t be any left for you?”
