Chapter 298
Queenie and Joanne had been worried about Joey, but after seeing how quickly she had pulled herself together, they knew she would be all right.
"You've always managed to keep a level head even when times get rough," Joanne praised wholeheartedly. She admired women like Joey, who dared to keep moving forward.
Joey had enough good sense to step away from a bad marriage. Single motherhood was tough, but it was better than having to live with a vicious mother-in-law.
Now, she and Jackson no longer had to walk around eggshells like they did with Lily or contend with misery. They were free.
The days went by, and soon came time for the mixer. Joanne had been manning the shop during the day. There were more customers than usual today, though that was probably because of the increasingly cold weather.
Anyone who walked past the store would pop in and grab a bag of warm, roasted chestnuts or a fluffy cinnamon roll. The milkshakes and poached pears were selling like hotcakes, too.
