I should have known better than to look—it only upset me.
As I was about to turn my gaze away, I saw Chris turn his head. His eyes met mine through the window, and he frowned.
I didn't linger on him, instead turning my attention to Brandon. He was done ordering and the waiter was repeating his order. Surprisingly, the dishes he'd chosen were all my favorites.
But how could he know what I liked? He didn't know me well enough for that. Maybe we shared the same preference.
I looked at him, wanting to ask, but my mouth barely moved before I decided against it. Asking too much would show I cared, and I couldn't let Brandon get that impression.
So, instead, I asked, "Do you want a beer?"
"I don't drink," he refused, "and I have things to do this afternoon."
Oh right, he had to go house hunting. I thought that was why he refused, so I said, "It's fine. I'll go with you this afternoon. I won't let anyone take advantage of you."
