Chris fixed his gaze on me. "Do you know what Conrad's missing out on?"
He could tell how Conrad felt about me, so this was his way of seeing how I'd react.
I played dumb. "Only he knows what he's missed out."
Chris didn't say anything as we walked on. When we passed a fish pond, he commented, "He has a bunch of fish here. He says that when it's feeding time, he just calls out, 'Meal time', and they all come swimming over in a line."
"Seriously? Conrad can talk to fish?" I joked.
"Don't believe me? Let's check it out." Chris guided me to the pond.
Plenty of goldfish glided through the water—reds, yellows, whites, and mixed colors. They were plump and lively, obviously well-fed and absolutely charming.
"Go on. Give it a shot," Chris urged.
I stirred the water, and the fish darted away in a flurry. "How am I supposed to do that?"
