Chris looked at me, still seemingly confused.
"Jewel was just the final straw that broke the camel's back," I explained with a smile. Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind—when one could talk about past pain with a smile, that was when they had truly let go of their hurt.
"Madeline, I just don't get it. You can say I'm at fault for what happened with Jewel, but I was good to you before."
It seemed like Chris couldn't accept that cracks had long since appeared in my feelings for him.
"I'm not denying you were good to me. But what about how I treated you? Did you ever feel it? Did you even notice?" I asked softly.
Chris stared at me in silence for a moment, then lowered his head. "I didn't cherish you... I lost you."
"What's the point of saying this now? Let's get back to talking about Jewel. What's your plan? Are you worried that your parents won't approve if you decide to be with her?" I steered the conversation back on track.
"Be with her? Do you take me for a fool or a sucker?"
