It wasn't until Lisa handed me the freshly brewed coffee that she finally said, "Chris is such a jerk. I never realized how awful he was until he showed his true colors."
I took a couple of sips of the coffee. "Turns out, he was just pitying me."
Even though Chris and I had broken up, the great memories of our past still lingered in my heart. But today, his words shattered the fragile facade around those cherished moments.
Lisa gently squeezed my shoulder. "It's not too late to see him for what he really is."
I stayed silent.
Lisa nudged me. "Do you want to get back at him?"
"What?" I felt utterly defeated.
Chris' words had ripped open old wounds, exposing the most painful part of my life.
But he was right about one thing. After the car accident, when my parents lay in the cold morgue, I was left alone in the world. I had no idea what to do.
I was even afraid to go home. There were moments I thought about dying, too, just so I could be with my parents again.
