CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND TWO – CHARLOTTE THE BARMAID

The rest of the week passed in a similar fashion. Charlotte learned to dodge groping hands, to balance six pints on a tray without spilling a drop, and to shout over the din to be heard. Her coworkers, initially wary, began to warm to her. Maggie shared gossip during slow periods, and even the gruff Mr. Davies started to nod approvingly at her efficiency. On her day off, Charlotte decided to explore the town. She wandered through the market, marveling at the simple joy of choosing her own vegetables without a butler or cook to guide her. As she turned a corner, she nearly collided with a familiar figure. "Richard!" she exclaimed, quickly setting down her basket. "What are you doing here?" Richard, dressed down in a simple shirt and trousers, looked almost boyish. "I had to see you, Lottie. Mother's been in a frightful mood since you left.
