CHAPTER FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE – FINALLY SOME PROGRESS
"Can I help you?" she called out, her voice surprisingly strong.
Jasmine hesitated for just a moment before approaching. "Good morning," she said, pitching her voice slightly lower than usual. "I couldn't help but admire your building. I don't suppose you have any apartments available?"
The old woman – Sofia, as Jasmine would soon learn – regarded her with a keen gaze that seemed to look right through her disguise. For a heart-stopping moment, Jasmine was sure she would be turned away.
But then Sofia's expression softened, just a fraction. "Perhaps," she said slowly. "Why don't you come inside, and we can discuss it?"
The interior of the building was as worn as the exterior, but clean and well-maintained. Sofia led Jasmine to a small apartment on the second floor, apologizing for the creaking stairs.
"It's not much," she said as she unlocked the door, "but it's quiet, and the neighbors mind their own business."
