It seemed like Mackenzie sensed my gaze. She looked over at me and tilted her chin higher up. "Such a shame, isn't it? If Astrid were here, she'd be able to attend my engagement party," she said with a touch of mockery. "Well, it's just another outsider. If she doesn't come, then that's fine too." It was as if nobody noticed Chase wasn't there either. Mackenzie had been paying attention to him before, but now, with her becoming the future Mrs. Gray, she seemed to have lost interest in any other man. I stopped bothering her and headed back to my office, making sure no one noticed me. Once I was sure I was alone, I called Julian. It took a while before he picked up, and his voice sounded groggy.
