Deacon didn't stay long, and when Mackenzie returned, she didn't even care whether he was still here. She charged straight toward me.
"Why isn't Astrid in the hospital?"
"How would I know? I'm not her mom." I shrugged, looking at her exasperatedly.
Mackenzie seemed to be irritated by my response. Gritting her teeth, she asked, "Aren't you supposed to be her best friend? You knew she was in the hospital, but you don't know anything else?"
She narrowed her eyes, clearly trying to catch me in a lie.
I was quite good at this sort of back-and-forth.
I narrowed my eyes, meeting hers. "So what if I am? She's just an intern at the company. You're in the same batch as her. Shouldn't you know more about her? Why don't you ask her family where she is? I'm curious, though, Mackenzie. Why are you suddenly so concerned about her? She's just an intern."
