Helen carefully stepped out of the elevator, avoiding the motion-activated lights. If Julien happened to be around and saw her, it would be unbearably awkward—utterly humiliating, even. It wasn't that she had softened or wanted to reconcile; she was merely concerned about him coming over so late, wondering if he had run into traffic.
She searched the area but didn't see any familiar figure—just a drowsy security guard nodding off in the booth. Helen even stepped outside the lobby to take another look but still found no one.
