Julien tightened his embrace instead of letting go, his scent tinged with a mix of herbs. "I'm sorry."
At that moment, Helen felt as though her heart was ill, her throat clogged with cotton, dry and hoarse. She couldn't muster a single word.
Julien bent his back slightly, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. His voice was low and tender. "It's my fault you've ended up like this. I owe you so much."
"No, you don't."
Helen gripped her pants, forcing herself to find her voice. "You don't need to take the blame. What happened between us was consensual. To be honest, you've done nothing wrong. At least when we were together, you stayed faithful. For that, I'm grateful for the time we shared."
Julien didn't feel relieved after hearing this. His brows remained furrowed. It wasn't what he wanted to hear, nor was it what he hoped for. Her tone made him realize she was slowly but surely cutting him out of her life, piece by piece.
"Can you let me go?"
He acted as if he hadn't heard her
