It was hard not to feel guilty about meeting Vanessa right after Kieran talked her husband into divorcing her.
I almost fled the bar, but I owed it to Vanessa to at least offer an explanation.
She was sitting on a red barstool and waved at me.
I approached slowly.
‘I ordered you a dry martini,’ she said. ‘I remember you liked it during the wedding party.’
‘Thanks.’ I sat down next to her.
The lighting was dim.
It was hard to make out the expression on her face, though her voice sounded calm enough.
I played with the coaster. ‘It’s rare to see you free on a weekday night.’
‘I got another doctor to switch shifts with me.’
‘Um, is there something on your mind?’
‘I’m getting a divorce,’ she announced.
I winced.
Here it came—the tears and the recriminations.
‘Are you sure?’
She nodded.
She was staring into her drink. ‘Marty called me this afternoon. Said his lawyer would bring the divorce papers to me. Asked me to sign it.’
‘That’s it?’ I was shocked. ‘Didn’t he at least want to talk to you
