ELIZABETH’S POV
I sighed as I got up in the wee morning, still angry about the rat that had scared me the previous day.
I’d been working as a maid in the pack for weeks, and it was a struggle every day. Lance’s treatment of me hadn’t changed, but I’d noticed something different in his eyes sometimes. A flicker of curiosity, maybe? I wasn’t sure.
Megan, Lance’s sister, had been kind to me from the start. She’d intervened on my behalf, getting me assigned as a maid instead of doing hard labor. I’d been grateful, but now I felt something more. A sense of attachment, maybe? To Megan, yes.
I pushed the thought away, focusing on my work. But as I cleaned the floors, I caught glimpses of Lance, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.
One day, as I was dusting the living room, Lance walked in, his eyes scanning the room before landing on me. “Elizabeth, I need to talk to you,” he said, his voice firm.
