"Everything seems to be in order, Ms. Carlisle," the woman said, her tone clipped but satisfied. "Your attention to detail is commendable."
Rebecca felt a weight lift from her shoulders. The job was done, and done well. She shook the woman's hand, watching as she departed, then turned back to the fair with a lightness in her step. Now, she could truly enjoy the day without any lingering worries.
As she wandered through the fairgrounds, Rebecca found herself drawn to the various food stalls. The scent of grilled corn wafted through the air, mingling with the sweetness of funnel cakes and the savory aroma of sizzling sausages. She stopped at a brightly painted stall, ordering a stick of cotton candy on impulse.
As she waited, she overheard a group of teenagers nearby, excitedly discussing the upcoming events.
"Did you hear about the dunk tank?" one girl asked, her eyes sparkling. "I heard the mayor volunteered to take a turn!"
