In my life, I had only ever watched Isabelle sleep. Her face always had that baby-like quality—petulant, innocent, and cute.
But this was completely different. Edith's sleeping expression wasn't childlike or stubborn like Isabelle's. It was peaceful, almost serene, as if nothing in the world could disturb her.
She had been exhausted these past few days.
Getting up early, and working late into the night every day—it was no wonder she crashed the moment she had the chance. I probably cut into her rest by coming over tonight.
Forget it. Let her sleep. We could handle the rest tomorrow.
I carefully lifted the laptop from her arms and placed it on the desk. Then I grabbed the thin blanket bunched up at the foot of the bed and gently draped it over her, tucking it in a little around her neckline.
Just as I was about to stand up, a hand suddenly reached out from under the blanket and grabbed mine.
I froze.
When I looked up, I realized she was awake, her eyes wide and innocent, staring
