Everywhere people went, they were gossiping and condemning the so-called well-connected student with powerful backers. People speculated about the student's identity. Not long after, rumors of her being an illegitimate child or a country bumpkin trying to climb the social ladder spread wildly. Logically speaking, Wendy should have been hiding at home, too ashamed to show her face. But there she was, coming forward to collect her documents.
