95 A Terrible Betrayal
The first few days of the march went well. Gavadiol, his father, his friends and some of the other captains that made up the ad-hoc war council were always in constant communication.
“Lucas will want to reduce our ranks from the flanks.” Sorrentino said one day, biting his lips thoughtfully. “We have to watch for that. Guide against that.”
Gavadiol twiddled the wand in his hand as he considered. They were all aware that for every minute they were out in the open, they were at great risk.
Already, Konstantin had already come up with the idea of wooden shields. “In case of any surprise archer attack again,” he had said.
It had been gruelling work splitting logs and carving out the shield. Gavadiol promised himself that when he assumed the throne of Aerithor, the first thing he would do was to plant the trees again.
But at least they all felt safer knowing there was a wooden shield to call upon should there be a need for it.
