Chapter 4

Maureen turned her head and moved closer to Marcus Mo. Her loose hair somewhat blocked my view. But there was no mistaking what I just saw. She was kissing my husband. He didn't push her away. He didn’t even blinked nor flinched at all. What’s going on? They are siblings! No matter how close they are to each other. This is not right! I remembered when I tried to kiss Marcus Mo during our wedding. He pushed me away, as I repulsed him. I’ve known Marcus Mo since we were young, and he wasn’t the type who would cheat. If anything, he was a stickler for the rules. But this? Him and Maureen? No! I'll talk to him about this as soon as possible! There must be a reasonable explanation. My mind went blank as I rushed downstairs. As soon as they came through the door, I ran up to Marcus Mo and hugged him. I looked at the face of the man I love. "Marcus, we’re going to have a baby," I happily said to him. "Oh, I must have forgotten! Today is your operation at the hospital." His reaction surprised me as well. It seemed that no one told him that I came to the hospital at all. I thought his assistant who answered my call had already told him. So he didn't come because he didn't know. Thinking about it now I tried to hold back my tears. I don’t want him to see it. I turned to Maureen. Her face was pale, seemingly drained from blood. As if it was her who had undergone the procedure instead of me. "Sarah,” said Marcus Mo. “Go back to your room and rest. Don't go out if you got nothing else to do here, all right?" He isn’t even looking at me. Does he still despise me? Marcus Mo went to his home office and I returned to my room upstairs. I sat and then lay down on my bed and closed my eyes. I was so tired and sleepy. But when that scene with Maureen and him kissing came drifting back in my head, sleep suddenly seemed so far away. I squirmed in my bed turning over and over again. For what seemed an eternity, my mind let go. Everything went silent. I woke up to the sudden sound of someone knocking on my door. It was Maureen. She also held something on her hand. It was a jewelry box. Was this what they had bought in Wanda Plaza? Maureen walked in, motioned as if handing the box to me. She then whispered, "Here, take this. Treat it as a gift to celebrate your pregnancy." A sudden act of kindness? From Maureen? I eyed her suspiciously, not letting my guard down. With that, she turned to leave. Marcus and Maureen bought it as a gift for me? Did I hear her right? Maybe she wasn’t that bad at all. Could this be the start of a new friendship with her? Perhaps that kiss was just some sibling playfulness between the two. I slowly opened the box. It’s a beautiful necklace! I was stunned. I couldn’t take my eyes of it. This was the only gift Marcus ever gave me. And his sister, too. I put it back in the box for safekeeping. I wanted to treasure it. From that day on, Maureen stopped troubling me. Was it because Marcus was back? As for Marcus Mo, he still left early for work and came home very late. I never got a chance to speak to him. I could only tell that he was home when his car was parked outside. A few months later, my belly began to swell. So this is how it feels to be pregnant. But I always felt something unusual. I tried to shrug it off. I was walking down the stairs when I felt a wetness between my legs. How could this be, aren’t women supposed to stop having periods when pregnant? As I looked down, I saw blood flowing from my feet to the floor creating a small puddle of crimson. Then I realized I could be having a miscarriage. I completely panicked. I went to Marcus Mo’s room and banged on the door. " Marcus! Marcus Mo! Are you there? I’m bleeding!" Marcus Mo opened the door almost immediately. He looked at me and then at the trail of blood behind me on the floor. He drove me to the hospital. There were beads of sweat on his forehead. He asked for me to be carried into the emergency room. He kept looking at me. His face was a mixture of fear and panic. As he saw the doctor coming our way, Marcus Mo approached him. "Doctor, please make sure the baby is safe," he said. This was the first time I heard Marcus Mo sound worried. I couldn’t believe what I just heard. After the checkup and some tests, it seemed that everything was fine. The doctor prescribed a medicine for me to keep my baby, and some vitamins. When we got home, I suddenly remembered the scene back at the hospital. Marcus Mo actually caring for my well-being seemed so genuinely real. I felt myself smile as I glanced at him. "Marcus” I began, “Thank you...for caring for me back there…" He stopped on his tracks. With his back turned against me, he spoke. "You know its about the child. Not you, just the child."
