Chapter 13
“That's nothing. Without capability, your dignity is nothing. If you just want money, nothing is impossible.” Maeve looked at Tiffany, smiled, and said, “Thank you for helping me just now.”
“You’re welcome.” Tiffany was cheerful and carefree. She stared at Maeve with bright eyes.
Maeve felt slightly awkward because Tiffany was staring at her. “Why are you staring at me like this? Is there something on my face?”
“Yeah.” Tiffany nodded. “You look so pretty.”
“Pfft!”
This lame compliment made Maeve chuckle in amusement.
“I really mean it. You’re really beautiful. You’re so pretty. Your temperament is also decent. You look more gorgeous than the celebrities on TV.”
Maeve smiled indifferently. “I’m not that beautiful. I spent time in prison, and it was hard for me to get this job. Keeping it would be difficult too. No company is willing to hire someone with a criminal record.”
“You’ve made such good sales. As long as you work hard, you won’t be fired.”
Other than this, Tiffany also did not know what she should say because she was also just a sales assistant.
“I hope so.” Maeve smiled. “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Don’t think about it. I’ll go and organize the inventory.”
Luna and the gang tried a few sets of clothes and shoes just now. Many items were still strewn about the fitting rooms and shoe racks. She had to quickly organize them.
“I’ll help you.”
Tiffany enthusiastically went forward and helped her. They were very efficient, so they cleaned up very quickly.
For most of the rest of the day, Maeve was worried. She was afraid that the shop manager would talk to her and fire her.
However, the shop manager did not approach her all day, even when she was clocking off work. It was like nothing happened.
Maeve felt very conflicted. In the end, she took the initiative to go to the shop manager and said, “Ms. Sullivan, I’m sorry. I hid the fact that I spent time in prison. Will the company fire me?”
“Why would we fire you?” The shop manager was checking the sales report today. When she heard it, she looked away from the computer and looked at Maeve. “If you told me during the interview that you have a criminal record, I might not have hired you. But in these two days, I saw that you’re hardworking. Your performance is good too. The sales of the matching outfits you closed are quite good. Since you can do this job well, there’s no reason for me to fire you just because you have a criminal record. Just do your best. Since you’ve served your time, just live your life well.”
Maeve felt warm, and she kept thanking her. “Thank you! Thank you, Ms. Sullivan!”
The shop manager, Yolanda Sullivan, was in her thirties. She was a capable and gentle person.
She smiled. “Why are you thanking me? You got this job on your own. Alright, it’s late now. Quickly clock off work now.”
“Okay! Thank you, Ms. Sullivan! I’ll head home now.”
“Okay, goodbye.” Yolanda continued checking the sales report.
Maeve finally felt at ease.
She had secured the job.
The salary was not high, but she would be able to get a firm foothold only if she had income.
When she finished calculating her total commissions for the day, she became even happier.
She happily walked to the parking space and scanned a shared bike. When she was about to cycle home, a red sports car suddenly stopped beside her.
“Maeve, it’s really you. When did you get out?”
Ron got out of the car. He wore a polo shirt with white pants, and he looked suave and graceful. He sized Maeve up.
She was slimmer and more beautiful than she was three years ago.
Her innocence and naivety in the past had disappeared. Now, Maeve was indifferent, cold, and gorgeous. She was seductive now.
Ron looked at her, and he became absentminded for a while.
Maeve curled her lips into a sneer. “You were the ones who put me in jail back then. What is it? Did I need to tell you that I was released? Did Yvonne tell you that I was released?”
“No. I found out that you were out and selling clothes after I saw Rhea and her gang’s Instagram posts.”
Maeve stared at him, and she coldly said, “I’m selling women’s clothing, not men’s wear. Young Master Ron, do you want to buy clothes for your wife and support the store?”
Before he spoke, Maeve continued, “I’ve already clocked off for the day. If you want to buy clothes, please come again tomorrow. Our working hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.”
She was about to get on the bike and leave.
But Ron grabbed her arm.
“Wait, Maeve.”
Maeve immediately swung his hand away in hatred.
“Ron Stevens, what are you trying to do? I wanted to talk to you three years ago, but now, I have nothing to say to you.”
“I…”
Ron opened his mouth, but he did not know what to say.
After he saw Rhea’s Instagram post, he subconsciously drove here.
He proposed to her that year because he dared not disobey his grandfather. He had been forced to marry her.
Maeve was very pretty, but her character was gentle. She was kind too, and she was an easy target for bullies. He really did not like her, so he did not care about her. He did not like her at all back then. In fact, he hated her very much because his grandfather forced him to marry her.
Ron’s attitude was abnormally good today. He said, “I know that you hate me for not helping you back then, but I have my reasons.
“I could not grab a firm footing in the Stevens family, so I needed to marry a wife who could help me. Yvonne is just Sabrina’s niece, but Sabrina has power in the Lawson family, unlike you. Your parents didn’t like you, and you didn’t even have any family members you could rely on. Perhaps you might not be able to get anything from the Lawson family, so you were not even comparable to Yvonne.
“The truth came out as I guessed it would. The Lawson family kicked you out, and you have nothing.”
Maeve immediately questioned him. “Since I’m that unbearable, why are you here? Ron Stevens, what do you want?”
Ron did not know why he was here either.
He just could not help but come here.
When he saw her cold and gorgeous face, his heart fluttered, and he instantly knew why he had come.
He smiled, took two steps forward, and tried to hold her hand. “Where are you staying? Get in. I’ll send you home.”
Maeve felt annoyed, so she kicked him. “Go away!”
Ron felt hurt. He immediately kept his distance. “Maeve, you changed. You were so obedient and gentle in the past. Why are you so shrewish now? You even kicked me!
“Look at you! You have a beautiful face and a gorgeous figure. It’s such a waste that you’re just selling clothes in this kind of shop. Your life probably isn’t great now that you’re out of jail. You’re poor now, and your living expenses must be high. You need money to live your life. What can you do with the little money you earn from selling clothes?
“Seriously, all rich men have affairs. Even if they are married, many of the couples are having fun on their own. You liked me so much in the past. Why don’t you be with me? I won’t mistreat you. I’ll buy you a three-room apartment and a car, and I’ll also give you a huge amount of pocket money every month. I can’t give you the status that Mrs. Stevens has, but we can still live our life like a normal married couple. I promise you that as long as you’re with me, I won’t see other women. The houses in Riverside City are not cheap. Many people can’t afford a house even if they work their whole lives for it.
“I’m telling the truth. Just be realistic and think about it.”
