Chapter 10

The ancestors of the Stevens family were people whom she could read about from a history textbook. Although they left the military and joined the business industry, the family was still very strict with their behavior. Maeve awkwardly said, “I’ll go and prepare breakfast first. I’ll clean the room later.” Matthew murmured his assent before he looked at her with a complicated gaze. What was wrong with this woman? Why was she losing her temper so early in the morning? Was it her time of the month? Or was she upset that he had left her alone last night? Maeve felt gloomy, but she did not make breakfast half-heartedly. She made some coffee and two breakfast wraps. The golden wraps were brushed with sweet pasta sauce, and inside were eggs, cucumber slices, and tenderloin. It smelled very nice, and it also looked tasty. “It’s time for breakfast. I’ve made breakfast wraps and some coffee. I don’t know if it’s to your liking.” Matthew liked Western food, and all his daily meals were specially prepared by his nutritionists and senior chefs. Even if he did not go back to his villa, he would go to a high-end Western restaurant, or Liam would pick food up for him. He could force himself to accept ordinary food like ravioli, but the breakfast wraps… He had never seen breakfast wraps before. The sauce was very strange, and the reddish meat looked poisonous. “No, thanks. You can have that. I’m in a hurry.” Matthew indirectly rejected her. Pretending to be poor was more tiring than pretending to be sick! When Maeve heard that, she immediately took an insulated bag and packed one of the wraps for him. Then, she packed a box of milk for him too. “Skipping breakfast is bad for your stomach. Take it and eat on the way.” Matthew despised it, but he was afraid that Maeve would notice his distaste, so he dared not express it. When he got to the underground parking lot and got into the second-hand Volkswagen, he casually threw the breakfast on the passenger seat and immediately started the engine. He drove out of the neighborhood. He turned left, then right before he made it to Fortune Street, which would not have heavy traffic before and after working hours. A black Rolls-Royce Phantom was parked at the roadside. It was still early. There were very few cars on the street, and there were not many people. When Liam, who was sitting in the driver’s seat scrolling through his Instagram, saw the familiar Volkswagen, he immediately put away his phone. He got out of the car and approached him. “Mr. Stevens.” Matthew glanced at the breakfast he had thrown on the passenger seat and coldly said, “Throwing this breakfast away would be a waste. If you haven’t had breakfast yet, you can take it if you don’t mind.” Liam felt flattered. “Thank you, Mr. Stevens.” He left too early today, so he did not have the time to have breakfast yet. The breakfast wrap was still warm. Liam spoke with sincerity. “Mrs. Stevens is the daughter of the Lawson family. I didn’t expect that she would make such a down-to-earth breakfast.” “Can you stop talking and eat?” Matthew immediately glared at him. Liam did not say any more. He just quietly ate the breakfast wrap. He had to say that the breakfast wrap was really tasty, and it was even more delicious than those sold in restaurants. It was the best breakfast wrap that he had ever eaten. Matthew lit a cigarette, and the white haze blurred his handsome features. After he smoked it, he gave an order to Liam with his cold and profound voice, “Find somebody for me.” “Mr. Stevens, who are you searching for?” “Maeve’s grandmother.” “Okay!” Before they got married, Matthew asked him to investigate Mrs. Stevens. Mrs. Stevens indeed had a grandmother, but he did not do a thorough investigation. He did not know where she was and whether she was even alive. Why did Mr. Stevens suddenly want to look for her? Liam was curious, but he did not question him further. Since Mr. Stevens asked him to investigate, he had to follow those instructions. …… After Maeve had breakfast, she did the dishes. Then, she went to clean up her room. She glanced at the time. It was only 7 a.m., and there was still some time before she would need to leave for work. Maeve took out the bank card that Matthew gave to her from the bedside cabinet. Then, she went to the nearest ATM. Matthew’s driver would definitely earn more than regular drivers, but he was just a staff, and the money he earned was from his hard work. Land in Riverside City was very expensive, and the houses in Nunavut Bay were also not cheap. If he had to pay the mortgage, he might not be able to save up much. Maeve did not have high hopes. Therefore, when she saw the balance on the card, she widened her eyes in disbelief. She checked again and again to make sure that she was not mistaken. There was about 150,000 dollars on the card. She was the daughter of the Lawson family, but her life was even worse than the maids in the family. Even while she was growing up, she had never seen such a huge amount of money before. From the balance in the card, she could tell that this man was sincere. But she did not know how long his sincerity would last. Maeve did not plan to be a parasite that relied on a man to survive, so she did not struggle with this problem. Living well right now was enough for her. Nobody could be sure of what would happen in the future. It was not convenient to buy groceries with the card, and she could also not link Matthew’s card to her PayPal and Apple Pay. After considering, she withdrew one thousand dollars first. After she put away the money and card, she held onto her wallet tightly and went to the nearest market. She bought some vegetables. Then, she bought pork, beef, and eggs. She was holding a few shopping bags. She stopped by the supermarket to buy a food container and an insulated food container. The insulated container was for Matthew. He was driving around every day. If his food got cold, he could not easily heat it back up. There was a microwave in her workplace, so she could just use the normal lunch box. The insulated container was more expensive than the normal food container. There was a lot of money on his card, but he earned that money with his hard work. She would save up as much as she could. When Maeve went back home, she put the groceries she had bought into the fridge. Then, she took out the remaining pasta noodles. She added two eggs and made stir-fried pasta. Now, she had her lunch and dinner for today. When Maeve looked at her fully filled lunch box and glanced at the empty insulated container, she instantly felt a little embarrassed. He went out early and came back late every day, and it was very tiring. She lived in his house, but he was paying for the house expenses and groceries. As his wife, she had to make sure he had warm food. Otherwise, she would be neglecting her duty. Maeve quickly put half her pasta into his container. Then, she went to make some salad in the kitchen. She only left after she filled the insulated container to the brim. The clothing shop would open at 10 a.m., so it should be fine for her to be there half an hour earlier. She still had plenty of time. Maeve took the lunch box, scanned a shared bike at the entrance of the neighborhood, and cycled to BioTrail. When Maeve looked at the tall building that had dozens of floors, she subconsciously smacked her lips. Just by looking at the building, she could tell that the Stevens family was just as wealthy as the rumors said. Maeve took a deep breath before she walked into the building and went straight to the reception. “Hi, I would like to look for Liam Scott.” “Liam Scott?” The receptionist sized her up. “Do you have an appointment?” “No, I just came to deliver some food to him.” “A lunch box?” The receptionist chuckled, and she curiously asked, “Are you his… girlfriend?” “No, I’m his wife,” Maeve decently said. “Please wait for a while. I’ll give him a call.” The receptionist was very efficient. She immediately called Liam. The call was answered very quickly. When Liam heard that a woman had delivered him a lunch box, he thought he had heard it wrongly. “Are you sure that she’s delivering a lunch box to me?” “Yes, she said she is your wife.” Wife? Liam was puzzled. He was single. When did he get a wife? Hold on! It was Mrs. Stevens. She had come to their company building!
