"Right on time."
I broke eye contact as my hands trembled slightly. Sitting across from Sophia in the dimly lit café, I tried to steady myself. Nothing about the small, innocent face before me bespoke violence, but the sharp glint in her eyes and the straightness of her posture set off warning bells in my head.
"I came alone," I said, my voice shaky. Sophia smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling into adorable slits as she nodded.
"I know… I also knew I could trust you to an extent."
I licked my lips and sighed. "Why?"
"Because you are a good woman, Marie. Unlucky? Yes. But good nevertheless."
She leaned forward, pushing a file towards me across the table. "How well do you know your father?"
I swallowed hard, trying to will away my nervousness. "Well, enough."
She shook her head slowly, her sharp green eyes piercing mine. "You don't know him at all."
