"One by one, my fellow workers dropped dead as if they had completely lost their collective consciousness. They didn't struggle at all." Alekai could still feel the lingering fear as he recounted the harrowing incident.
"Did you investigate it later?" Perseus hurriedly asked.
"Not at all." Alekai slowly shook his head, looking grim and helpless.
"Did Grandpa know why they died?" Perseus asked again.
"Not a clue. We'll have to ask him about it. In any case, my fellow miners were dead, and I alone survived them." Alekai shook his head once more, and things instantly felt forbidding.
"Could it be some kind of gas leak in the mine? Maybe you all succumbed to the fumes."
The thing was, mines tended to have a lot of mishaps. The air was stuffy and poorly circulated in there, if at all. The likelihood of accidents and lives lost was incredibly high during the initial stage of production.
For instance, water could've seeped into a coal mine and caused a cave-in that smushed miners.
