Very soon, the courthouse opened its doors. Lily went in first to wait for their turn. She sent Xavier a text to remind him not to be late but received no reply from him.
A Cullinan was parked in a corner of the street outside the courthouse. Xavier had arrived long ago and had been watching Lily in secret the moment she got off the bus.
Xavier noted that Lily was all dressed up, looking more refined than those who were there to register their marriage.
He didn't think she was truly there to finalize their divorce. To Xavier, Lily seemed like she had deliberately dressed up to seduce him and have him reject the divorce.
For five days, Xavier felt like he was living through years, waiting for Lily to show up at his door and say, "Let's not divorce". Or perhaps she would resort to some clumsy means to convince him to give up.
But nothing came from his waiting. In the two years of their marriage, Lily would text him almost every day, yet the past two months had been absolute silence
